Gap-Filler

Do you ever feel like being a “gap-filler” is your true calling?

Do you look ahead and try to smooth out the rough patches, big and small, for those you care about so deeply? This happens often, and many times women are naturally empathetic and great at multi-tasking which lends itself to this role.

As I was preparing for the next school day, I made sure that the kids had their clothes out and noticed a triple knot in a tennis shoe that had been slid off.  Instinctively, I began taking the knot out and loosening the laces to smooth out the morning routine.

Walking out of Lyric’s room I was checked with this thought.  Don’t we often look to God as our “GAP-FILLER”?

We look to him to smooth out the rough patch or speak at just the right moment. But isn’t He really looking for us to see Him as the central source of all things and not just the one we need to “fill in the gaps” for us?  The things we can’t CONTROL.

Often, we set the plan and beg for His intervention. We fill our world with chaos and beg for peace. We cry out for more of God but don’t carve out time for Him to fill us.

This is the equivalent of a woman that is only needed when there is a gap instead of being cherished for just being a woman created by the mighty hand of God.

Ouch. I never want to treat my God in this way.

Just as we fill in the gaps for those we love, God freely does that for us. Sometimes we see it, but I know there are FAR MORE times that we never even know about.  I wrote a song several years ago that said, “for I’ll never know the ways that you cover me each day” and I stand by that whole heartedly.

I would even bet that in this small way Lyric will never notice that I untied those shoes for her…but she doesn’t need to.

Let’s check our view and our affections for our Savior. Let’s challenge the core of who we are to let God align the basics. This WILL require some hard, unflattering realities to surface, but the beautiful future that it can bring is FULLNESS in GOD and not just those bits and pieces that fill in the gaps. He is more.

Colossians 1: 16-17

16 For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
